Impact Austin Member and Girls Giving Grants Co-Chair
Girls Giving Grants (g3) is the youth initiative of Impact Austin, a giving circle for girls in grades 8-12, founded in 2006. Members of g3 pool $125 donations each year to collectively fund one grant announced in April. Each fall, training activities prepare them for the grant review process. Reviews begin in November. Here is a recap of their activities to date.
September
The year's program began with a leadership retreat that included g3 leaders and adult co-chairs and advisors. This occurred even as new members were still registering. On September 22, the 59 members held their first meeting that included a welcome, team building, and application review training.
October
On October 13, we had the privilege of hearing from two community speakers who shared their experiences working in the nonprofit sector. They also generously provided valuable tips. Following the community panel discussion, we participated in an ethics training session.
Community Speakers
Brigid Shea - Travis County Commissioner, Precinct 2
Brigid Shea, a former award-winning NPR reporter, has demonstrated her resilience in the fight against climate change in Texas since 1988. Elected to the Travis County Commissioners Court in 2014, she has focused on supporting residents and addressing climate change. Her efforts to combat climate change and prepare the community for its impacts have earned her three National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards.
Bianca Guerrero - President, Far East Austin CDC
A resident of Austin’s Colony in Far East Austin, Bianca Guerrero has dedicated herself to improving her community. She played a key role in founding the Far East Austin Community Development Corporation, which serves residents in the Hornsby Bend area, focusing on infrastructure and economic development. Additionally, she serves as a grant reviewer for the City of Austin, evaluating cultural grants.
November
On November 10, we officially launched the review process for the grant applications. It was an excellent opportunity for everyone to come together, collaborate, and exchange ideas. We began by conducting a mock review of applications, which helped familiarize us with the process. Additionally, we provided training on the best practices for handling and managing confidential information, ensuring that everyone is well-equipped to maintain the integrity and privacy of the materials involved. It was a productive session that set a positive tone for the next steps in the grant review process!
